The LDS Church: Your Thoughts?

Dear all,

I posted recently about my experience of attending a service at a local Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints chapel. I had obtained a copy of the Book of Mormon after speaking briefly with a couple of missionaries from the church. I had been praying about whether to read the book, and the Lord led me to do so.

The Book of Mormon is interesting in that it contains very many passages that seem to be paraphrases of expressions found in the Bible. This led me to be curious about the content and to consider whether it might be a fabrication. It’s worth noting that this is the first time in my life that I’ve explored the faith, and I am a real novice. I didn’t do research online as I’m increasingly sceptical of using search engines these days.

I wondered whether any readers of this blog have read the Book of Mormon, and if you have, whether you would like to share your thoughts on the book? Feel free to leave a comment and explain your thoughts in detail if you would like to.

Thank you for reading.

Steven

  1. I have read all of the Book of Mormon as well as The Pearl of Great Price and some of Doctrine and Covenants. I have deep concerns about Mormonism. I’ll list just a few here, but I’m happy to give more examples. These are just off the top of my head.

They claim to be Christians while denying core Christian doctrines. A few examples are that they deny the Trinity. They teach that God the Father and Jesus are completely separate beings and that Heavenly Father and Heavenly Mother procreated to have all of us as their children in order to populate Earth. Jesus is literally their firstborn son and when trying to come up with a plan of salvation in order to redeem their sinful children Heavenly Father chose Jesus’ idea instead of his brother Satan’s.

Further, Heavenly Father was once a man and followed the Plan of Salvation in his mortal life and that is how he became God. Since he was man he was fallen and needed redemption too. So a truthful mormon cannot affirm the statement that “God never sinned.”

Most of the heresy and blasphemy in mormonism comes from Pearl of Great Price and D&C and the other teachings of their prophets. The Book of Mormon, as you read, is actually kind of fun and mostly harmless religious fiction. As you pointed out, large portions of it are plagiarized from the King James Bible, in some places complete with typos! The problem arises when they have you pray a prayer to feel the “burning in the bosom” so that you know from the testimony of your heart is that the Book of Mormon is true and if it is true then the LDS church is true and now you have to be under their authority.

But Scripture tells us that the heart is deceitful above all things. And Deuteronomy tells us how we ought to test prophets, not through a prayer and a feeling, but by whether he commands us to go after other gods and the god of mormonism is not the God of the Bible. Moses also says to test prophets by if their prophesies do not come true. Joseph Smith had a few of those.

    Deuteronomy 13:1-3;18:20-22

Anyway, I wanted to be brief, but there it is.
