Is Faith Greater than Truth in God’s Sight?

I’m wondering which you believe is more important: faith or truth?

Christians and Muslims disagree on the subject of whether or not Jesus is God. If God favours faith over truth then atonement for sin through the crucifixion of Jesus – accepted by faith – is perhaps the most important thing in the world.

But if truth is more important than faith, then understanding the history of the Bible and the Qur’an becomes very important, because if the truth is that Jesus didn’t really claim to be God, then Islam and other religions must be taken seriously.

So which is more important? Please leave a comment below with your perspective.

Jesus said he is the way the truth and the life, he also referred to himself as I AM which is the Old Testament reference to God. So, I believe without a doubt that Jesus is the son of God and is God. God bless 🙏

You are welcome brother, I would say that faith and truth go hand in hand. If faith is in God and truth is in him, then both of them become one. Faith comes from hearing the word of God and the word of God is truth. I hope this answer helps.

        1. I understand where you’re coming from, brother. Only I love God and can’t understand why He would send all non-Christians to hell when the reality is He is in control of the beliefs of all people. God talks to me and tells me things and I think it must be God I’m hearing because I’m praying to Him and begging Him for mercy. I honestly don’t believe in free will. If it’s a sin to be honest, God must have revealed something to you that He hasn’t to me. If I ask you if you believe in free will and you say yes, are you telling the truth? If God is in control of everything that happens, and if God is the all-sufficient One who does not suffer, is He really going to subject all non-Christians (whose lives He has unfolded in every detail) to hell? Perhaps He will, He has total freedom, but I hope in His goodness and mercy.

Thank you for your honest and very thoughtful provoking response brother! I have honestly wondered myself why God would send nine believers to hell, yet it was something Jesus often spoke about and I cannot shut that out of the word. From what I understand, God is in control and has a sovereign will, but he also gives the freedom of choice. If we were not allowed to choose between what’s right and wrong then God could not judge us for our actions, God would be wrong to do so. However, as God once said to the Israelites “I have put before you life and prosperity, death and destruction – now choose life….” Deuteronomy 30:15-20. Even Jesus resisted his own will so he could fulfil the will of the father, he could have called 12 legions of angels to rescue him from the cross (Matthew 26:53) but yet he did not even though he had a choice. Hell is not a place God sends people too, it’s a place people choose because they don’t want to be with God, therefore they are getting what they asked for which is a life without God – that in our terms means hell. I hope this answers your question brother.

            1. I don’t think we do have the freedom of choice. Do you freely choose to grow your body, to beat your heart, to circulate your blood, to dream and to wake up, to live and to die? God is in control of all things brother, that’s the truth. I know the Bible contains warnings from Jesus about hell, and the Qur’an warns about hell repeatedly and emphatically, so I take the idea very seriously. I have agonised over it for years. You said “if we were not allowed to choose between what’s right and wrong then God could not judge us for our actions “ and I agree with you that divine judgement in the absence of free will doesn’t necessarily make sense. But it’s true that we don’t have free will. Perhaps we are entering a new era in which truth will prosper and the true scope of God’s mercy and grace will be revealed? Perhaps there will be no judgement? God has spoken to me about this, but only He knows for sure. I beg God for mercy for all sentient beings because suffering can be truly severe. I don’t want anyone to suffer the torment of hell, and I think all human beings want love, grace, peace, and mercy. Perhaps God does too? I hope so.

I hear you brother! I would so love for hell not to be real but I cannot deny the words of God. Remember, our source of Gods words is found in the bible, if what we hear does not agree with what is written then it’s not from God. God is not only one that speaks to us, the devil speaks to us too if we allow it. In the garden it was the devil that said to Eve “did God really say” , our enemy loves to make us confused about what God really said. We can desire as much as possible for a truth to not be so (such as the existence of hell) but no matter how much we want that we cannot change the truth. Yes God is merciful and he longs for many to turn to him, this is why Jesus has not returned yet! Once Jesus is back there is no second chance because it’s all over. Yet while we are hear and our hearts are beating, we can always turn to God. Remember brother when God speaks, it must line up with his word, if it does not then it’s not truth but a theory.

            3. Alright let’s keep going with this! You said ‘our source of God’s words is found in the Bible’. But millions of Muslims believe in the Qur’an. Muslims believe the Qur’an is the word of God just as much as you believe the Bible is. Muslims worship God devoutly. What’s your perspective on Muslims and their beliefs and what whether they will go to hell if they don’t convert? And what about Hindus and Buddhists?

You said ‘when God speaks it must line up with His word’. Doesn’t God always have complete freedom to do whatever He wishes? Why would His speech not line up with the Qur’an, or another Scripture He has yet to reveal?

Because I believe God is in control of all things, when God speaks to me it surely must be Him. Every day I pray for protection from evil, so can this really be Satan talking to me?

You say God longs for us to turn to Him but God is in control of all things. In an instant He could make us all become Christians. He is unfolding a plan for creation, He is in control of all things, and He does whatever He will.

I understand that you accept the Bible as your binding authority. It does actually make sense to me because I experienced Christian modes of mind for many years. I’m open to believing again, but I just find it hard to accept that the voice that speaks to me is the devil and that we do have free will.

I do actually regard myself as a Christian, God tells me I’m a Christian. But He also said that Jesus is not God. If Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to Him as righteousness, how did God speak to Abraham? Was it not in the same way God speaks to me? Surely I must trust what God tells me?

Please do respond to my questions because these are all important matters.

Hello brother, hope you are well today! You ask some very valid and challenging questions, without a doubt you certainly have deep understanding, or at least desire it to ask such questions. So, let’s get to it. I work with Muslims, I understand that to Muslims Jesus Christ was only a prophet and not the son of God or even God himself. I know they cannot see how God can possibly have a son, how can that be if God is almighty, that would mean Jesus was not God almighty. However, on many occasions Jesus declared that he and the father are on, John 15 speaks about the vine and the branches and that Christ is the vine. Therefore, to put him as less than God would make him only a prophet, yet no prophet has ever rose from the grave, yet Jesus did. The bible says that if we confess with our mouth Jesus Christ is Lord and believer in our hearts God raised him from the dead, we will be saved. Therefore, without Christ we cannot enter heaven because we need a perfect record to enter – this is why the cross and resurrection are so fundamental in Christianity – Jesus takes our sins and gives us his righteousness.
God does certainly have freedom to do whatever he wants, but it’s impossible for God to do two things – 1) lie and 2) deny who he is. As I do believe the bible is Gods revealed word, I therefore hold to the scriptures as a reference point to see what God is saying. Therefore, denying Jesus to be God means I’m only cherry picking certain scriptures and ignoring the references to Christ as God, doing this means I’m making my own version of the gospel. It cannot be good news if we don’t share why there needs to be good news – that is we all fall short of Gods glory but Christ made away because while we were Gods enemies Christ died for us.
I pray for protection from evil too, but sometimes the devil still get in and cause all kind of issues. Even Jesus was tempted in the wilderness by Satan. Sometimes God permits evil or bad circumstances so our character can be strengthened, yet he is sovereign over all situations and already knows what we will do before it’s done. Does that mean God is controlling our will or does that mean God is so above our ways and thoughts that he can already determine what choice we will make? Jesus said that before we speak the father already knows what we will say, but that does not mean we do not choose what we speak. If we do not make our own choices and God controls all, why do we have a capable brain and the ability to learn? We would not need to learn if God, who knows all things was the one making all the decisions on our behalf. Also, taking away free will therefore takes away any account that we must give before God. Simply put, God cannot judge someone who does not have a choice in what they do. When Jesus spoke to the Pharisees he said it would be better if they were blind and did not see the miracles through him, but they did see, therefore they are guilty of sin.
As for me believing that Jesus is God, any voice that says he is not God I can not consider as being Gods voice. Read 1 John 2:22 brother as this speaks about this part. The bible does not record how God spoke with Abraham, we know that he spoke to Moses face to face on the mountain. Yet the law was given through Moses so Abraham would have had access to the pentetauche (first 5 books of the bible). We have the whole bible to refer too, so therefore, what we hear in our hearts, dreams or perhaps our mind, we can therefore check with the word of God.

I hope that these answers help brother! God bless 😊

            7. Thank you for the detailed response brother. I believe in the goodness and mercy of God and I hope and pray that His loving kindness will extend to every human being, including Christians and non-Christians, and every other sentient being. If the truth is that there is no free will, and that God does not suffer, it is conceivable that mercy will triumph over judgement. May it be so.
