Dear friends, for several years I have had a picture of a top hat (🎩) as my favicon for this blog. However, in my mind top hats can be associated with arrogance and the elevation of one class over other classes, and these ideas aren’t ones that I wish to reflect, seeing as I have embraced the Christian faith where the values of humility and equality are paramount.
I wanted to design a new favicon that was suitable for the blog, and for the beliefs that I hold these days. I know many bloggers don’t necessarily think too deeply about this kind of thing, but my blog means a lot to me and is a big part of my life and ministry, so attention to detail is important to me. I want people to have an experience that inspires them when they visit my blog, so I try to put thought and care into every aspect of the blog.
With these considerations in mind, I have designed a new logo, and here it is:
The cross needs no explaining, of course, but the fact that it’s at the centre of the logo represents the fact that Christ is at the the centre of my life. The swirls represent a few different things. Firstly, I feel that they are chaotic, in that they aren’t regular shapes, and aren’t tied together. I also feel that they are perfect, because they are symmetrical. So they represent my blog’s title in this respect.
Also, the top swirl looks somewhat like a ‘P’ and the bottom swirl looks somewhat like a ‘C’, so this is another way in which the logo represents the blog title. I also feel that the swirls represent philosophy, because they remind me a little of certain symbols from Eastern philosophical traditions. So this means the idea of philosophy (at least, when I look at it!) is incorporated into the logo. I consider myself to be a Christian philosopher, so I wanted the logo to reflect that. The swirls surround the cross in the same way as philosophical considerations surround my faith.
You can see the logo with a red background on my personal website which I updated with the new logo today. If any of you have added my blog to your bookmarks, you should start to see the icon appearing there. It will also be visible when my blog comes up in searches in the Reader or Google, as well as in the top right hand corner of the New Post emails you receive when I publish a new article.
I hope you like the logo and that my explanation makes sense, it’s just a bit of fun really but is also meaningful to me.
Thank you for following Perfect Chaos!
